About Montana Learning Center
The Montana Learning Center (MLC) provides and promotes quality immersion experiences for all in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) in a unique lakeside environment. Primarily utilizing residence camps, the common goal across all programs is to foster analytical thinking skills and the ability to make connections across disciplines. Kids’ camps target students from elementary school through high school, with over 200 campers in 2017, and focus on themes such as aerospace, earth science, or biology. All camp staff involved in programming are certified teachers, and projects include searching for a polishing Montana agates, analyzing samples taken from Canyon Ferry Lake, and building model airplanes and boats. The MLC also offers popular workshops for teachers to help encourage analytical thinking not only at camp but also throughout the region’s educational system.
We are based at Canyon Ferry Lake, and a large percentage of our campers come from the Helena area, but we serve the whole state of Montana.
Project / Needs
We would like to add another week of camp for kids during the 2018 summer season and bring in more local authors and artists to support the interdisciplinary “A” part of our STEAM programs, a relatively recent addition to our offerings.
An annual letter campaign, and board matching challenge (we have 100% board contribution).
How will the funds be used
Funds will be added to the general budget and used to finance ongoing programs, such as the annual “STEAM in the Rockies” teacher workshop that occurs every fall. In addition, given growing interest, we would like to add another week of camp for students during the summer 2018 season.
