About Sleeping Giant Citizens Council
An affiliate of Northern Plains Resource Council, Sleeping Giant Citizens Council advocates for healthy, inviting, and sustainable communities by educating, mobilizing, and testifying to ensure citizens’ voices are heard in the decision-making process. Sleeping Giant is improving local access to renewable energy options in Helena, and working to protect our clean air and clean water from carbon-intensive energy sources.
We also are kick-starting Green Drinks once again in the Greater Helena Area. Green Drinks is a monthly, informal gathering of environmentally minded locals! Join us each month for good drinks and conversation with great people. Kids are always welcome if accompanied by an adult.
Green Drinks Billings is organized by the Helena affiliate of Northern Plains Resource Council – a grassroots conservation and family agriculture group that organizes Montanans to protect our water quality, family farms and ranches, and unique quality of life.
Helena, East Helena, the valley, and the surrounding areas. We have members from Clancy and Montana City to Boulder.
Our scope of works covers Lewis and Clark, Jefferson, and Broadwater counties.
SGCC has over 100 members working to effect positive change in the Helena community. Our history of farm-2-school and local food advocacy, watch-dogging the Marysville mine and looking out for our members whose clean land and water were at risk, and facilitating solar workshops and energy efficiency projects prove our impact and showcase the level of respect that members and non-members feel for SGCC.
Our most recent community events include the Homegrown Energy Film Fest and the upcoming Solar-ease workshop, as well as starting up Green Drinks for the city of Helena again.
Project / Needs
2018 Sun Run for Solar! – our organization partners with the Helena Vigilante Runners to put on a 5K and 1 mi race/walk for the Helena community every year since 2015. The race serves as an education tool and rallying mark for renewable energy access in our community, whether that be focusing on residential, commercial, or community entities. We envision an energy future in Montana that works for everyone.
Our main fundraising effort is for the Sun Run and the Carroll College solar array. Other fundraising efforts are associated with other Sun Run partnerships (we’ve done fundraising for the Holter Museum and also met a lot of success raising money for the Lewis and Clark library solar array on the roof there).
How will the funds be used
Funds will be rolled back into Green Drinks expenses in the future, and a portion of the funds will also be contributed toward the solar project that is partnered with the Sun Run on any given year. This year we are partnering with the innovative environmental studies professors at Carroll College. Next year we may be partnering with an affordable housing project in Helena called Red Alder.
